🤝 Client:
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction
📩 Request:
One of the conditions on the purchase specifications obtained from Doosan, the detector volume should be 25L over, and the detector size should be at least 1000x500x50 mm. Although Polimaster's PM5000A-01H RPM was a reliable model, it featured detectors with a smaller volume than what the client required. The customer inquired if the model could be modified to meet their larger detector volume specifications.
🚧 Challenge:
The main challenge was increasing the detector volume while preserving the existing functionality of the PM5000A-01H model, which was optimized for four gamma and four neutron detectors. The system and user software were not designed to manage or display data from eight gamma detectors, which would be necessary to meet the larger volume requirements.
🔍 Solution:
Polimaster engineers developed a custom solution. A new firmware was created to handle data from eight gamma detectors, pairing their readings so that four detectors appeared in the software. Each displayed reading represented the combined data of two physical detectors, maintaining compatibility with the existing system while significantly increasing detection sensitivity. The design of the frame was modified to install the eight detectors, and an innovative sensor configuration was tested. In this configuration, both the emitter and receiver of the presence sensor were housed in a single unit, with a reflector on the passive pillar. Although this design proved unreliable and was eventually replaced with a more traditional setup, it provided valuable insights for future developments.
✅ Outcome:
The customer's requirements were met. The monitor's sensitivity was greatly increased, and the activity of the minimally detectable radiation sources was reduced. Since its installation in 2013, the system has performed effectively, with remote software updates and enhancements, including the addition of Korean language support, ensuring it continues to meet operational needs.
